Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011 — My mailman probably thinks I’m mad at him if he finds it odd that I suddenly have quit buying things on eBay that require his services. Maybe he thinks I’ve gone Fed Ex happy; the young lady who delivers this route is truly a hottie, but that’s the topic of another entry. No, I’ve just had too much going on in the “real” world to fool with doing much online — or doing much on the air, either.
One item I received that I didn’t prattle on about in this space was this 1921 Michigan ARRL Convention thingie I sniped some time back. The thingie is made of metal and is in the ARRL diamond shape, 2-1/4 inches high by 1-1/4 inches wide. This convention souvenir predates the cast iron half-size Wouff Hong replica that served as centerpieces on at the ARRL US Convention in Chicago in 1928 or 29 (can’t remember). As shown at right, it carries a day of May 20-21, 1927.
The souvenir is stamped metal, and the printing is actually engraved with painted relief. I’m not really sure if it was designed to be a Christmas ornament, or what; its stood the test of time. I have never seen a souvenir like this, so yeah, I would call it a very unique item. I probably overpaid for it, but things like this are only worth what at least one person will pay, and from the looks of it, there were five or six of us wanting it really badly! I only got it because my bid went in with one second left, and my max turned out to be a couple dollars above the last bid. Luck, it was.
The logo will go on display with my Wouff Hongs (both Convention items, the later being 1/4 size with an ashtray base) and my ARRL national convention vase (an oddity, for sure!).
I have more to write, but no time to do so. Until next time dear reader, 73!
