I've been doing some very casual operating during this weekend's VHF contest, making Q's on 6 meters. This morning the band has been open to Colorado, with a lot of stations in DM79. I worked a guy in EM09, which is east of Colorado. While tuning around the band for stations I hadn't worked, at about 1500Z the DM79 stations took a very deep fade; it was clear that the band was changing.
Down about 50.135 I found a KF4/VP9 calling CQ and apparently working quite a pileup. His signal quickly peaked and began dropping into the noise. I got a couple of calls in, but even with phones on he settled into the noise. My 100 watts to a j-pole wasn't going to work thru that pileup he generated!
As I write this, I'm hearing a VE5 coming up on top of a DM79 station, and the VE5 just worked an EI9 (or perhaps he thought he did!).
I've not made a lot of contacts, and I suspect when my wife gets home from work she'll pull me away for honey-dos. I better make hay while the sun shines and operate!
