VHF fun!

I had a chance to work a few dozen contacts on 6 meters during the recent VHF contest, and I had fun. I didn't spend a great deal of time in the shack, seems I had other stuff to do. I didn't plan for it, so I enjoyed the time I had.

With the string of recurring storms we've had lately, I've been disconnecting antennas as much as possible. During today's thunderstorm we had a very close lightning strike that induced one hell of a voltage in my antenna — the spark that jumped from my coax connector to the ground of the connector was hot. blue and snapped noisily! I'm surprised it didn't arc over inside the tuner, but apparently it didn't.

I probably should get away from the PC and fire up the rig and check in on the KSN tonight. I can only imagine the QRM!

I miss working 6 meters … I am out of the habit of leaving my 6 meter rig on and squelched lightly on the calling frequency. The beauty — and challenge — of e-skip is that it can show up any time of night or day. Come to think of it, I'm going to turn the rig on now.

Field Day is just over a week away. My wife and I are traveling west on Field Day Tour 2009. We plan to hit the LTARC site in Vine Grove, Mammoth Cave site, KY Colonels in BG, Russellville, Owensboro, … about 12 places total. We plan to spend the night out on the road and then come back Sunday morning. Sixteen groups have their Field Day site on the ARRL FD finder. I need to encourage all of them to do that.

That's all this time, work aways …. 73 de KY4Z … dit dit
