Ahh, the lure of Field Day! That time of year when hams across the U.S. drag their gear out to God-knows-where and take part in an event that's part contest, part picnic, and part emergency preparedness exercise.
Last year my wife and I went on a tour of Central Ky. Field Day sites, and it was a blast! Field Day is done differently by each group, and the variations are interesting.
This year my plans are complicated by the fact that my son is coming home from scout camp on Saturday, and my wife has to work Saturday morning. Our intial plan was to leave Saturday and head west, spending the night in Paducah before returning back on Sunday. We're not going to be able to do that, unless I go alone. My wife doesn't want to stick our son with her mom, and she after a week away, she wants to be here for him.
It looks like we'll get to head out about noon, and hit as many sites as we can on Saturday before coming home. I wanted to hit Princeton and Paducah, but I don't know that I'm going to be able to go that far. It's 3 hours drive time back. Maybe on Sunday morning we'll hit a couple of other FD sites. Probably not, most wrap up by noon.

It looks like next Tuesday will be the final installment of “The Brooks & Ken Show” on 1320, WBRT. Our weekly/twice-weekly politcal talk show will likely end since my co-host, Kenny Fogle, has sold the station and turns over the keys next Tuesday. It's been a good three year run. We've had politicians far and wide as guests, from governors and gubernatorial wanna-be's to local candidates for office.
I would like to continue dabbling in radio. I don't have the quick-on-my-feet gift of gab that Kenny has; or perhaps I lack the opportunity and confidence to try it.
One of the best parts of the show was our format — Kenny was the liberal, I'm the conservative. Listeners enjoyed us battling back and forth, and there were some issues we absolutely disagreed upon. But there were many others we agreed on.
Former U.S. Rep. Ron Lewis called us “The Hannity & Colmes of Nelson County,” a title I was more proud of than Kenny, who never believed Alan Colmes was liberal enough.
I don't know what the owners plan to do, but they are looking at some syndicated talk show programming. I would like to stay on, but that's not my decision. I would like to either have rotating guest hosts or another liberal to spar with on the air.
We take a lot of calls too, and where the show goes tends to follow the listener's input.
One of the biggest losses would be no longer being in a newsroom or media outlet on Election Night. There's nothing I love more than Election coverage!
I guess we'll see what happens. Right now we're billing next Tuesday's show as the final one for Brooks & Ken. When one door closes, another opens … or that's my hope 😉
I'll be hitting the road for Field Day, and hope to operate from points across the Commonwealth.
