Tuner tune-up ahead …

Thursday, Nov. 14, 2019 — I received a couple of antenna tuner-related items in today’s mail — both are 4:1 baluns, a 300-watt version and a larger 3kw version.

I was going to buy balun kits from Amidon Associates, but I found the parts I needed in one spot — the MFJ Enterpises catalog.

The baluns are complete; the 300-watt 4:1 balun is the same as used in MFJ’s current line of antenna tuners. The larger 3kW balun is the same as used in the company’s MFJ-989 tuner. Buying both already wound and assembled from MFJ was cheaper than the kits from Amidon. I also picked up the needed ceramic feed-thrus that will allow me to connect my balanced feedline to the tuner once the balun is installed.

I’ll put the larger balun in the homebrew tuner I purchased earlier in the year. I have exclusively used balanced feedlines for my HF antennas, so without a balun, I can’t really use the tuner.

Oh, and to top it off, I just snapped up a 3kW MFJ Differential T tuner. I’ve always wanted to try a differential tuner, but never cold afford full price. I snapped this one up for a relative song. When I’m done, I should be able to have balanced feedlines to a dozen different tuners, hi hi.

Of course, my world may get rocked completely in the very near future — my wife wants to make an offer on a home in town, meaning we’ll wind up leaving our home overlooking the waters of Cox’s Creek. I have very mixed feelings about it … I really like the new house, but the thought of moving all of my stuff — well, it isn’t a very enjoyable thought after being here 20-plus years.

I’ll keep you posted … 73 es CUL … de KY4Z SK SK … (dit dit)
