I give up. I quit.
For months I have been using a four port 12 VDC distribution block that uses the newfangled (in my shack they’re new, anyway) PowerPole connectors. And for months, I’ve struggled with most of said PowerPole connectors.
Sometimes the crimps won’t hold; a gentle (or not-so-gentle) tug and the damned wire pulls out. I’ve been having trouble with the connectors snapping in place and staying there when I connect the PowerPole-equipped wires and attempt to the distribution block.
I’m thinking that perhaps in my messing around, I may have sprung the contacts in the distribution block — particularly the main DC input connector. The connectors from the power supply keep jumping halfway out of the connector, no matter what I do.
Of course, the distribution block is from eBay but appears reasonably well built. But in the end, I’m just really, really tired of putzing with it.
Tonight when I tried to check in on my CW net, I didn’t notice the input connector was half unplugged. As soon as I hit the key, the transceiver blinked off. ARGH!
I have an extra MFJ-1118 DC power strip — just like the one I’ve used for years in Studio A — and I’m going to shit can the PowerPole connectors and use the MFJ power strip. I’ve already ordered several dual banana plug connectors, which I prefer over using the terminal screws for cables powering 100 watt transceivers.
I haven’t made any changes or made any progress on Studio C yet — beyond moving equipment upstairs. With the arrival of spring weather, I’ve been spending time outside, working on my tractors, our garden, mowing, etc. But I’ve located some things I need to put on eBay, and I also need to break down and buy a second operating table to place upstairs. My wife removed a chest of drawers that was in my way, so the path is now clear for my operating position.
The best news today is that the local Radio Shack is now open! Woot! I’m going to go there tomorrow and buy a pencil soldering iron.
That’s it for this trip … more to come!
