Tonight I decided its time to move things around in Studio C — time to remove the Omni V.9 with a eye at putting one of my Heathkit SB-102s in place. I didn’t get up to the shack until after 8 p.m., and I didn’t want to fire up the Heathkit without having time for it to adequately warm up, so I removed the Ten-Tec and instead, decided to use my Tempo 2020 to check in on the CW net.
The Tempo really is a great rig, and I haven’t fired it up lately, but tonight was a good night to give it a try. The great thing about the 2020 is that as a hybrid, it has virtually zero drift with a short warm-up period.
Using the rig re-introduced me to the just how nice it is on CW.. The Tempo 2020 was factory equipped with a 500 Hz CW filter, and it is pleasant to listen to.
The SB-102 and speaker/power supply take up more room than the 2020 and matching VFO, so I’ll have to move the 2020 station off the desk before moving the SB-102 on the desk. I may wind up putting the 2020 station on top of the Heathkit … or not.
SX-117 CHECK OUT. I pulled my Hallicraftes SX-117 off the shelf and put in on the desk to check it out. My memory was that the rig worked once I jumped the T/R terminals on the rear.
The rig worked, not too much hum. But the audio level was quite low. I need to check the tubes. I’m thinking the incoming RF signal must be low because the S-meter doesn’t move, and the audio gain has to be full open to copy signals.
Otherwise, the rig is on frequency and other than some dirty contacts on switches, it seems to be working reasonably well.
