Audio filtering in a DSP world …

Sunday, Jan. 23, 2022

I received my used MFJ Signal Enhancer II, MFJ-752B in the mail recently. I’ve owned a couple of these in the past. The first one had been “modified” to the point it didn’t seem to work. The second one I got tired of using quickly when I found that the instructions really didn’t explain how the hell the unit worked.

I sold that one and later wished I hadn’t — especially when I found that my CW filter on my Kenwood TS-520S isn’t working properly. Now reviews I have read on this thing generally explain that the instructions are useless — you pretty much have to use trial and error to figure out how to work the thing.

At this point I have it working pretty well, and tonight it did just fine on the 520. A couple nights ago, the band was crazy, with signals piled on top of one another. The MFJ unit did ok until some other station started calling CQ TEST almost on top of our frequency. I know the sharp CW filter on my TEMPO 2020 wouldn’t have been sufficient to eliminate that station. I think they only rig I had that would have been useful was my Yaesu FT-2000, my FTDX-3000 or my Icom IC-756PROIII. All of those rigs have really superb DSP, but an audio-based filter would not cut the mustard.

I really enjoy the addition of the external VFO on my TS-520. I would like to pick one up for my Heathkit SB-102, but those VFOs are fairly rare and expensive when you find them.

SHACK WORK. While the weather is cold, I REALLY need to work in the shack and get things better organized. Until I get Studio C straightened up more, there’s not much I can do about moving my desks in the old shack upstairs. I might have to recruit my son to give me a hand tomorrow on his off day. He will love that, hi hi!

I have more CW keys to list on eBay this week. I sold one that I listed last week, and hope to move a bunch more. I’m only listing two a time, but I really should be listing half a dozen at a time. I’ll never get them sold at this rate, lol.
